Non-Convective Cloud Streets

Post by Charles Petersen »

Some days cloud streets appear early in the day, induced by the counter-rotaing cylinders of air, formed by the wind gradient , the lower wind speed at ground level that is the result of fiction with the ground itself.

A parcel of air can take a path reminiscent of the seam on a toilet paper roll, and where the sir is lifter by the rotation on either side going in an upward flow, the dew point can be reached and a series of cumulus clouds for in a 'street'. Here is a photo of what that looks like:

As convection commences, the lines will become less straight but will channel the lift under the streets, and the sink under the blue in between.

Food for thought

Thanks Charles, always puzzled by the underlying factors for cloud streets.
Now if only Google Streets could give good information about them, it would be awesome.
